Sustainability for People, Planet, Profit
What makes the SustainabiliTree so sustainable?
Sustainability is based on three pillars: society (people), environment (planet) and economy (profit).
Impact on Planet:
By using a SustainabiliTREE less use of plastic, extended CO2 storage and a higher biodiversity is possible.
Impact on People:
The creation of a SustainabiliTREE is a new fun and bonding moment/ritual for you, your family and your friends.
Impact on economy:
The return on investment for you depends on the price you currently pay for a yearly Christmas tree. From now on, you only have to source branches instead of a whole tree. In regular, a return is possible after 3-5 years.
By opening a new market for branches, farmers are more interested in selling these. They benefit from higher flexibility and a new market for branches that can’t be used otherwise.
WHY to use branches instead of a real tree?
It is close to our hearts that no more trees must be felled for us. In this way, they contribute to the storage of CO2 and the purification of surface water and biodiversity. That is why the SustainabiliTree is made from sustainably certified wood. The cut greenery is either harvested from trees, growing 20-30 or more years or comes from unsuitable or too large trees and thus gets the chance to shine as a Christmas tree in your home. Finally, they find use in our homes.
One of three trees is not bought because it may grow crooked. The SustainabiliTREE is happy because there are branches left over. Every year the SustainabiliTree can be brought back to life. Or you can use it multifunctionally all year round as a lamp, coat rack, or decoration stand. For this, we recommend ordering optional feet.
What exactly is the impact? Does the promotion of fir greenery instead of trees lead to monoculture and the commercial use of forest land?
Our long-term big picture shows the promotion of more mixed forests, not just a pure fir plantation. And there is no need to ensure that the branches look "painted".
One fir tree can be turned into more than one SustainabiliTREE, i.e. the absolute number of already surplus firs trees in our growing areas is reduced, or too large specimens are simply pruned and the cut foliage used.
In the course of this, the entire effort and resource input of the fir owners will also be reduced. The branches of the higher-grown twigs can be harvested with a special cutter, similar to an apple picker.
Due to the cooperation with small regional growers, these people in particular, are supported in their existence.
How do I make my tree even more sustainable?
Let's support your local Christmas tree producer together! This helps your local economy and reduces CO2 emissions for transport. Because of their growth habits, producers often have trees in stock that are not used as Christmas trees. However, you can ask for the rejects so that you can still use the branches. If you ask, some foresters will also give you permission to collect your cut foliage in the forest. You can also try new ways of decorating your Christmas tree - make your own, following the example of Petterson and Findus, or see what you can find around the house.
How do the use of the SustainabiliTREE help to purify the water?
Trees help us clean up runoff and restore degraded landscapes. They improve surface water quality by minimising soil erosion, reducing sediment in water and trapping and filtering water pollutants in leaf litter. For the soil to help with this, it is essential to disturb it as little as possible. When Christmas trees are harvested, the roots are dug out of the soil, affecting the soil structure and increasing erosion. As a result, the soil loses most of its ability to store and purify water.
How does the SustainabiliTREE help in terms of biodiversity?
Like other trees planted by humans, Christmas trees are often planted in monocultures. Unfortunately, this is still the predominant method. While the trees provide more shelter and habitat than the city, SustainabiliTree is still trying to integrate different tree and plant species with Christmas tree producers through more regenerative practices such as agroforestry.
How does the SustainabiliTREE help to store CO2?
The general life-span of a tree: Through photosynthesis, a tree draws carbon dioxide from the air, binds it into sugar and releases oxygen. The sugar is then primarily used to form wood, branches and roots. Wood consists entirely of carbon, first stored in the living tree and then released years after the tree dies.
By keeping the SustainabiliTREE in our home and using it year after year, the sequestered CO2 is stored in our living rooms.
By-the-way:
But it is not only the trees that store CO2, but also the earth at your feet. The carbon sequestered in forests comes in many forms. For example, forest soils contain plant roots, leaf litter and other organic materials. The amount of carbon stored in forest soils depends on many local factors such as geology, temperature, soil type and vegetation. Therefore, leaving the trees standing and the grounds untouched for as long as possible is essential.
Setup of the SustainabiliTREE
WHERE DO I GET MY CUT BRANCHES FROM?
Branches in our Shop are sourced from min. 20-30-year-old trees or from trees that can’t be used regularly.
We offer branches for selected regions, and you can always approach your local tree dealer, go to a garden centre and sometimes it’s even allowed to collect some branches in the forest.
However, it is good to ensure that your branches are as fresh as possible and do not have a diameter of more than 2.5 cm. So you can enjoy the tree for longer, and it takes less time to fit the branches into the stem.
HOW DO I SET UP THE SUSTAINIBILITREE
It's easier than you might think! You have your branches? Then all you need is a pair of garden shears and a sharp knife.
Grab friends and family and make it a shared experience.
Each SustainibiliTREE also comes with detailed instructions manual.
1. Screw the tree together
2. Prepare the cut branches
3. Define the shape
4. Fill up the tree
5. Last but not least: decoration!
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE to Build up the Tree?
The SustainabiliTree stands within a minute. To put on the tree's beloved dress, the inexperienced among us need about one to one and a half hours. With more routine, however, it goes a little faster each time. It is also essential to know whether you want to cover the tree with branches on all sides or whether one side is sufficient.
We also hear repeatedly that setting up the tree is a beautiful family experience to ring in the Christmas season. The house is filled with the smell of fresh branches, loved ones gather around the tree and soon the SustainabiliTree shines in all its glory.
Do I need tools for the assembly?
Not for the construction itself. We recommend a pocket knife (remember, always carve away from the body!) and a pair of loppers to sharpen the cut greenery.
Can I decorate the tree in the usual way?
A SustainibiliTREE can be decorated like a regular tree, although we recommend staying within the average permanent weight, including tree decorations. For safety reasons, don’t use real candles.
May real candles be used?
We strongly advise against using candles or an open fire for the SustainibiliTREE!
As beautiful as real fire is, there are better ideas than combining an open flame and a resin-soaked, dry conifer!
About the SustainabiliTREE itself
Where is my SustainibiliTREE made?
The SustainibiliTREE is made by a small manufacturer in Germany.
How long do the cut branches stay fresh?
That depends entirely on when the cut branches were harvested.
The cut branches we send are freshly harvested and shipped directly to you. Sent by us, your tree will keep wonderfully between 3-4 weeks. As it is a natural product, we cannot guarantee this. However, it helps if you water the branches well immediately after delivery. Also, the tree should not be placed in a very warm place in the home, such as next to a radiator. If you want the tree to last longer, you can replace the branches or use fir and cypress species that will last longer than spruce branches, for example.
